You don’t need new furniture to make a room ready for a wedding. A dressing table from your mother’s jahez, a set of dining chairs or a pair of side tables can look fresh again in a weekend with chalk spray paint, and without a carpenter or a polish wala. The catch is timing. Paint needs drying time and the tops need sealing, so the work has to start about three weeks before the guests arrive. Here is how to plan it so everything is finished, sealed and back in place before the dholki begins.
The short version
- Start: about three weeks before the first function
- Paint: Pintyplus Chalk Finish Spray Paint, water-based, ultra-matte, 19 colours
- Quantity: roughly 1 m² of furniture surface per can for two thin coats
- Seal: Chalk Varnish on anything guests will touch or put cups on; Chalk Wax for decorative pieces
- Best time to spray in wedding season: late morning to mid afternoon, when it is warm and dry
Which furniture is worth refreshing?
Chalk paint is at its best on pieces that are solid but tired: faded polish, scratches, sun-bleached tops, or a colour that no longer suits the room. For a wedding home, the pieces that make the biggest difference are usually:
- The dressing table in the new couple’s room
- Bedside tables and a headboard
- Dining chairs, which guests notice more than you would think
- Side tables, a showcase or a console in the drawing room
- Wooden mirror and picture frames
Pintyplus describes Chalk Finish as ideal for wooden furniture and objects, and lists wood and melamine among its surfaces, so both old sheesham and modern MDF or laminate pieces are fine.
Some pieces need repair before paint. Fix wobbly joints and loose handles first, glue down lifting veneer, and if you see signs of deemak, deal with that before anything else. Paint will make a damaged piece look better for a while, but it won’t make it sound.

What a chalk paint refresh can look like
The cabinet below is a makeover our own team did, photographed before and after. It started out tired: an old turquoise finish, chipped and peeling at the edges, the kind of piece that usually gets pushed into a store room. It is solid wood with a carved door border and curved legs, which is exactly what makes it worth saving.

After cleaning and a light sanding, it was painted in a soft pink chalk finish. The carved border and the legs were then picked out in turquoise with small touches of gold, and the edges were lightly sanded so a little of the colour underneath shows through.

That second colour on the carving is what makes the piece look hand-finished rather than simply repainted. It works on the carved borders of old dressing tables, showcase doors and bed headboards too.

Start with the wedding dates: a three-week plan
Most chalk paint disappointments before a wedding come from starting too late and rushing the last coats. Work backwards from the first function.
Week 1: choose, buy and prepare
- Decide which pieces you will paint, and pick your colours.
- Measure the pieces and buy enough paint (see the next section). Running out halfway is the most common hold-up.
- Take off handles, knobs and hinges, and keep the screws in a labelled bag.
- Wash everything with a mild degreaser, rinse with a damp cloth and let it dry fully. Dining chairs and dressing tables carry more grease and cosmetics than you can see.
- Scuff glossy polish with fine sandpaper until it looks dull all over, and wipe off the dust.
Week 2: prime and paint
- Prime raw MDF edges, bare porous wood and daily-use laminate with Pintyplus Chalk Primer Spray. It dries in about an hour.
- Spray two or three thin coats of Chalk Finish, an hour apart.
- If you are adding a second colour on top, for example for a two-tone or distressed look, wait 24 hours before the second colour, as Pintyplus advises.
Week 3: seal and let it settle
- Wait at least 24 hours after the last coat of paint, then apply Pintyplus Chalk Varnish Spray to tops, chair seats and anything that will be handled.
- Give the varnished pieces a few quiet days before the house fills up. Put the hardware back, move the furniture into place and keep hot cups and heavy items off the tops for now.
If your dates are tighter, cut the number of pieces rather than the drying times. Two well-finished pieces look better than five sticky ones.
How much paint will you need?
Pintyplus rates a 400 ml can of Chalk Finish at about 2 m² per coat. You will want at least two thin coats, so plan on about 1 m² of surface per can, and a little more when you are putting a light colour over dark wood.
To work out the area, measure each face you will paint (length times width), add them up, and include the backs of chair legs and the edges of tops, which are easy to forget. As a rough guide, a bedside table usually takes about one can, while a large dressing table or a wardrobe takes several.
Choosing colours for a wedding room
Soft, light colours make a bedroom look calm and bigger, and they photograph well, which matters when the family takes pictures in the couple’s room. A practical approach is one light main colour for the furniture body, with a second, deeper colour used only on small parts such as drawer fronts or a headboard panel.
Chalk Finish comes in 19 colours, and our guide to choosing chalk paint colours shows how to match them to the room and the light. If you like the aged look of old palace furniture, layering two colours and sanding the edges back is covered in our distressing guide.
The painting method in brief
Shake the can for one minute after you hear the mixing balls. Hold it 25 to 30 cm from the surface and spray thin, fast passes, first horizontally and then vertically, starting each pass just off the edge of the piece. The first coat should look light and uneven; that is normal. Leave an hour between coats. When the last coat is dry, wipe off any loose chalk dust with a soft cloth.
When you finish, turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out so the nozzle stays clear. For a full walk-through on MDF, sheesham and laminate, see our beginner’s guide to chalk spray paint on furniture.
Seal what the guests will touch
Chalk paint is matte and open, so fingerprints, mehndi and spilled chai will mark it if it is left unprotected. Decide on the finish before you start.
- Chalk Varnish is a clear matte, water-based varnish that protects against dirt and helps waterproof the paint. Use it on tabletops, chair seats, dressing table tops and anything in a busy room.
- Chalk Wax gives a silky, soft feel. You spray it, spread it with a sponge or cotton cloth and polish. It suits decorative pieces such as frames and headboards, and needs renewing after some months.

Painting in wedding season weather
The months from October to February are good for painting in most of Pakistan, because the air is drier than in the monsoon. Two things to watch.
First, cold, foggy mornings leave dew on surfaces and slow down water-based paint. Spray between late morning and mid afternoon, when it is warmest and driest, and bring the furniture indoors before evening.
Second, wedding preparations bring dust. If the house is being whitewashed or the floors are being polished, finish that work first and let the dust settle before you spray. Dust that lands on wet paint stays in the finish.
One piece, two jobs
A refreshed cabinet, console or side table doesn’t have to wait in the bedroom. For the mehndi or the dholki it can be carried out to the courtyard or the lawn and used as a sweets, mithai or chai station, then go back indoors once the functions are over. If you plan to use a piece this way, seal the top with Chalk Varnish so sugar, oil and spilled drinks wipe off.

Common questions
Can I paint a dressing table that has a mirror?
Yes. Take the mirror off if it unscrews easily. If it doesn’t, cover the glass completely with newspaper and masking tape, pressing the tape firmly along the edge of the frame so no spray creeps underneath.
Will the house smell of paint during the wedding?
Chalk Finish is water-based and has very little smell. Spray in a ventilated room or a sheltered verandah, and by the time the pieces are sealed and back in place, there is nothing to notice.
Can I paint over polished sheesham without stripping it?
Yes. Clean it, then scuff the polish with fine sandpaper until the shine has gone. You are giving the paint something to grip, not removing the polish.
What if we only have one week?
Choose one or two pieces, such as the dressing table and a pair of bedside tables. Clean and prepare on day one, paint over the next two days, varnish the tops a day after the last coat, and keep them lightly used until after the functions.
