You need a chalk primer when the surface won’t hold chalk paint well on its own: raw MDF edges and bare porous wood that soak up paint, shiny laminate and Formica on doors and tops that are handled daily, and metal that could rust. On a clean, sound, matte surface such as old painted furniture in good condition, you can usually skip both primer and heavy sanding. Pintyplus Chalk Primer Spray is a white matte primer made to go under Chalk Finish. It improves anchoring, seals porous surfaces and helps protect metal against corrosion.
At a glance
| Surface | Primer? |
|---|---|
| Raw MDF edges and bare porous wood | Yes, to seal them |
| Laminate, melamine, Formica on daily-use doors and tops | Yes, for better anchoring |
| Iron and steel furniture | Yes, it helps protect against corrosion |
| Glossy polished or varnished wood | Scuff sand, then prime |
| Sound matte paint, decorative pieces | Usually no, just clean well |
What does a chalk primer actually do?
It gives the chalk paint a better surface to hold on to. Pintyplus Chalk Primer Spray is a white matte primer that Pintyplus says improves anchoring, seals porous surfaces and also helps protect metal against corrosion. It is listed for wood, rigid plastic, melamine, Formica, metals, porous wood, plaster and terracotta.
Being white also helps. A light chalk colour over dark wood or a patchy surface needs fewer coats over an even white base.

When do you need it?
MDF, especially cut edges
MDF faces are smooth, but cut edges and any sanded-through spots are porous. They drink paint and come out dull and rough next to the faces. A coat of primer seals them so the chalk paint sits evenly.
Laminate, melamine and Formica that gets daily use
Kitchen cabinets, wardrobe doors and table tops made of laminate are smooth and hard. Chalk Finish lists melamine among its surfaces, so a decorative laminate piece can be painted directly. A cabinet door that is opened many times a day is different. Prime it for better anchoring, and give the gloss a light scuff first. Our guide to chalk-painting kitchen cabinets and wardrobes covers the whole job.
Metal furniture
Steel almirahs, iron chairs and bed frames can take chalk paint, since iron is on the Chalk Finish list. Prime them anyway. The primer helps protect the metal against corrosion, which matters in monsoon humidity when rust starts at the first scratch. Remove any existing rust down to sound metal first.
Polished or varnished wood
Old furniture often has a glossy polish or varnish. Scuff it with fine sandpaper until the shine is gone, wipe off the dust, then prime.
Bare, porous wood
New unpainted wood absorbs the first coat unevenly. Primer seals it and saves paint.
When can you skip primer and sanding?
If the surface is already matte, clean and sound, chalk paint can go straight on. That covers most furniture that was painted before and is not peeling, as well as decorative items like frames, boxes, trays and pots made of materials on the Chalk Finish list.
What you can’t skip is cleaning. Pintyplus says the surface must be clean, dry and free of dirt. Wash with a mild detergent or degreaser, wipe with clean water and let it dry completely. Anything peeling or flaking still has to be scraped or sanded off, because chalk paint can’t hold down a coat that is already lifting.
What about old wood that stains the paint?
Sometimes a yellow or brown mark bleeds through a light chalk colour on old wood, from tannin in the wood or an old stain finish. Chalk Primer isn’t sold as a stain blocker. Pintyplus lists tannin among the stains its Anti-Stains spray covers. It is made for walls, so test it on a hidden part of the furniture first, or send us a photo and we’ll advise.
How do you apply the primer?
1. Prepare the surface
Remove handles and hinges, clean and dry the piece, scuff any gloss, and wipe off the dust.
2. Shake and spray
Shake the can for one minute. Hold it 25 to 30 cm from the surface and spray thin, fast coats, first horizontally and then vertically. Two thin coats are better than one thick one. One can covers about 1.4 to 1.6 m², depending on the surface.
3. Respect the recoat window
The primer dries in 1 hour. Pintyplus gives a recoat window of before 1 hour or after 24 hours, so either put the second coat on within the hour or wait until the next day.
4. Wait before the chalk paint
Chalk Finish’s own instructions say to wait 24 hours before painting over a different paint, so give the primer a full day before the first coat of colour.
Common questions
Can I use any white primer under chalk paint?
Chalk Primer is the one Pintyplus makes to go under Chalk Finish, which is why we recommend it.
Does primer change the chalky look?
No. It sits under the colour. The final look comes from the Chalk Finish coats.
Do I need primer on a painted wall shelf?
If the old paint is matte and sound, no. Clean it well and paint.
My laminate table is only for decoration. Is primer necessary?
Not strictly, since melamine is on the Chalk Finish list. For anything that is used and wiped daily, we’d prime it.
