Wrought Iron Effect Spray for Gates, Grills and Railings: What to Expect and How to Apply

What Pintyplus wrought iron (forge effect) spray looks like, where it works on gates, grills and railings, and how to apply it as primer and finish in one.

Wrought iron effect spray gives metal a textured, matt, antique-iron look in one product, because it works as both primer and finish. Pintyplus Wrought Iron (Forge Effect) Spray is a thick, tough matt epoxy coating in black or grey, made to decorate and protect gates, grills, railings, lamps, post boxes and garden stands. On clean, correctly prepared bare metal you don’t need a separate primer. Remove loose rust and grease, spray two thin coats from 25 to 30 cm, and let it harden before you handle it much. Galvanized steel and plastic need a specific primer first.

The short version

  • Product: Pintyplus Wrought Iron / Forge Effect Spray Paint, black or grey, 400 ml
  • Finish: textured, matt, antique iron look
  • Two in one: primer and finish on prepared bare metal
  • Uses: gates, grills, railings, outdoor lamps, post boxes and garden stands
  • Method: clean, de-rust, degrease, then two thin coats 30 minutes apart
  • Coverage: about 1 m² per can

What does a wrought iron effect spray look like?

Pintyplus describes it as a thick and tough finish that produces an antique iron effect. Instead of a smooth, flat colour, you get a slightly textured matt surface that looks like old hand-worked iron. It hides small dents and uneven welds better than a gloss paint, which shows every flaw.

We stock it in black and grey. Black gives the classic dark forged look. Grey reads as weathered iron and suits lighter walls and stonework.

Where does it work best?

Pintyplus lists railings, post boxes, exterior lamps, iron gates and garden stands, and says it has excellent durability outdoors. In Pakistani homes, that covers:

  • Main gates and side gates, especially ornamental ones with scrolls and bars
  • Window grills and balcony railings
  • Staircase railings, inside and out
  • Outdoor lamps, lantern frames and wall brackets
  • Plant stands, garden furniture frames and metal decor pieces

Because it is a primer and finish in one, it is quicker on detailed grillwork than a separate primer and topcoat system. Every bar only needs one product.

Do you need a primer?

On suitable, correctly prepared bare metal, no. That is the point of a two-in-one product. Pintyplus makes two exceptions: on plastic or galvanized steel, apply a specific primer first to make sure it sticks. For plastic items, use Pintyplus Plastic Primer Spray. For galvanized gates and grills, send us a photo and we’ll tell you which primer to use.

How do you apply it on a gate or grill?

1. Remove loose rust and scale

Go over the metal with a wire brush until loose rust, flaking paint and scale are gone. Pay attention to the bottom rail, joints and welds, where rust usually starts. If a weld has rusted badly, our guide to repairing rust at weld seams covers that first.

2. Degrease

Wipe off grease and oil with a solvent on a clean cloth. The surface must be clean, dry and free of contaminants.

3. Mask around it

Cover walls, tiles, glass and the ground under a gate. Spray on grillwork drifts through the gaps.

4. Shake the can

Shake for one minute after you hear the mixing balls.

5. Spray two thin coats

Hold the can 25 to 30 cm from the metal and spray thin, quick layers, first horizontally and then vertically. Two thin coats are better than one thick coat. On grillwork, spray from several angles so the sides of each bar are covered, not just the front. The surface dries in about 15 minutes, and our product page gives 30 minutes before the next coat.

6. Let it harden

Don’t open and close a freshly sprayed gate all day. Our product page gives about 24 hours for total drying, and Pintyplus says to wait 72 hours before painting over it.

7. Clear the nozzle

Turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out.

How many cans will a gate need?

Pintyplus rates a 400 ml can at about 1 m² for one coat. A gate or grill has two sides and lots of edges, and the job needs two coats, so measure the area and plan on several cans for a full main gate. For lamps, stands and small railings, one or two cans is usually enough.

What about Pakistani weather?

Monsoon rain and humidity are what finally beat most gate paint. Spray on a dry spell, when the metal is dry to the touch, and avoid the hottest part of a summer day when steel in direct sun gets too hot to work on comfortably. Early morning or evening is easier.

Spray in a well-ventilated place, and keep the spray away from anything connected to the electricity supply, such as gate motors, lights and bells.

Common questions

Can I spray it over old paint?

Over old paint that is firmly stuck, a light sanding and a clean are the usual preparation. Remove anything flaking first, because the new coat can only be as sound as the layer under it.

Is it only decorative?

No. Pintyplus says it decorates and protects metal, with excellent durability outdoors.

Black or grey?

Black for the classic forged look. Grey for a softer, weathered iron finish.

Can I use it on wood or plaster decor?

It is made for metal. For other materials, ask us first.
