Anti-Slip Spray for Stairs, Wuzu Areas and Ramps: How to Get It Right

Where clear anti-slip spray works on stairs, wuzu areas, ramps and bathroom entrances, how to apply it in several coats, and when the area can reopen.

A clear anti-slip spray can make wet stairs, wuzu areas, ramps and bathroom entrances far less slippery, as long as it goes onto a clean, dry surface in several light coats and the area stays closed until it has cured. Pintyplus Anti-Slip Spray is a transparent coating with friction-increasing particles, so the tiles or stone underneath keep their look. It adds grip. It does not replace a handrail, a sensible ramp slope or fixing a loose tile, and Pintyplus says the same.

  • Coverage: up to 2 m² per can

Why do wet floors get so slippery?

Polished marble, glazed tiles and smooth concrete have very little texture. Add a film of water, soap or oil and that film sits between your foot and the floor, so there is almost nothing for a sole to grip. That is why the same staircase that feels fine in dry weather turns dangerous after rain, and why the step down from a bathroom or a wuzu area is where people tend to slip.

An anti-slip coating works by putting texture back. The particles in the coating break up that film of water and give the sole something to hold on to.

What does the anti-slip spray actually do?

Pintyplus describes it as a clear varnish for slip prevention that increases surface friction. On our product page it is listed as a clear functional coating containing friction-increasing particles, for compatible slippery surfaces such as stairs, hallways, ramps, wet areas and edges.

A few points from the Pintyplus product information are worth knowing before you buy:

  • It dries transparent, so the colour and pattern of the floor stay visible.
  • It is waterproof, which matters in bathrooms, wuzu areas and showers.
  • Pintyplus states that its anti-slip effect is not affected by time or weather conditions.
  • No primer is needed on a clean surface.

Where does it work, and where shouldn’t you rely on it?

Stairs and step edges

The front edge of each step is where your foot lands first. Treat the whole tread, and give the front edge a little extra attention with an overlapping pass. On a staircase in daily use, do alternate steps first and the rest once they have cured, so people can still get up and down.

Wuzu areas and bathroom entrances

The floor around a wuzu area is wet for most of the day, and the tiles just outside a bathroom door get wet feet stepping onto them. Both are good places for a clear anti-slip coat. Clean off soap film and hard-water deposits properly first, because the coating can only grip what is underneath it.

Ramps and entrance hallways

Entrance ramps and hallways collect rainwater during the monsoon. A coated ramp gives shoes and wheels more grip. Coat the full width of the ramp, not just a strip down the middle.

Where not to rely on it

Pintyplus is clear that the coating is not a substitute for structural safety measures. If a ramp is too steep, a handrail is missing or tiles are loose, fix that first. Test the spray on a small, out-of-the-way patch of your floor before doing the whole area, so you can check how it grips and looks on that particular surface. Do not spray it onto anything connected to the electricity supply.

How do you apply anti-slip spray, step by step?

1. Pick a dry day and close the area

Humid air slows drying. Choose a dry spell, and plan the job for the longest gap in use: at home that might be late evening, and for a mosque wuzu area, after the last prayer of the night. Put up a simple sign or barrier so nobody walks through.

2. Clean, degrease and dry

The surface must be clean, dry and free of any contaminants. Scrub off dirt, soap film and grease, rinse, then let the floor dry completely. If an old wax polish is on the floor, remove it first.

3. Mask what shouldn’t be coated

Tape off the bottom of walls, skirting, taps and drain covers. Spray drifts further than you expect, especially in a small bathroom.

4. Shake the can for a full minute

Shake vigorously for one minute so the particles are properly mixed into the coating.

5. Spray several light, overlapping coats

Hold the can about 20 cm from the floor and spray in light, overlapping passes so the texture comes out even. Pintyplus says several overlapping layers are needed, with a few minutes between coats. Light coats give a more even grip than one heavy coat.

6. Keep it closed while it cures

The Pintyplus catalogue gives a surface drying time of 15 minutes. Surface dry is not the same as cured, so treat 15 minutes as the point where you can check the finish, not the point where people can walk on it. Keep the area out of service until the coating has cured as directed on the can’s label. In monsoon humidity or a cold, closed bathroom, allow longer.

7. Clear the nozzle

When you finish, turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out. That keeps the nozzle clear for the next job.

What should you plan for in Pakistani homes and mosques?

Monsoon rain is when stairs and entrance ramps are at their most dangerous, so the best time to coat them is before the rains start, on dry days when the coating can dry properly. Coating a floor in the middle of a humid week is where people get disappointing results.

Bathrooms and wuzu areas are often small and enclosed. Open the doors and windows or run an exhaust fan while you spray, because Pintyplus recommends applying it in well-ventilated places. Keep children away until the area is ready to use again.

If a wuzu area also has cracked joints or gaps where water gets in, seal those first with our Pintyplus Waterproof Sealer Spray, then apply the anti-slip coat once the sealer is ready.

How much anti-slip spray will you need?

Pintyplus rates one 400 ml can at up to 2 m². Because the grip builds up over several coats, measure the area you want to treat before you buy, and plan on more than one can for a long staircase, a full ramp or a large wuzu floor. It is better to have a little left over than to run out halfway through the last coat.

Common questions

Will it change the look of my tiles or marble?

It dries transparent, so the colour of the floor stays the same. You will feel a slight texture underfoot, which is what gives the grip.

Do I need a primer first?

No. Pintyplus says no primer is needed. The surface just has to be clean, dry and free of contaminants.

Can I wash or mop the floor afterwards?

Yes, once it has fully cured. It is waterproof. Keep the floor clean, because a layer of dirt or soap sitting on top reduces grip on any floor.

How long does the grip last?

Pintyplus states that its anti-slip effect is not affected by time or weather. Heavy foot traffic still wears any floor coating, so check the busiest steps now and then and add a coat where they start to feel smoother.
